Paraiso on Corn Island

CORN ISLAND
So the rain season came to an end on Corn Island! Paraiso and the island suffered no hurricanes or major storms. So it looks like we're in the clear :-)

Through this blog I will try to keep you informed about news, developments and other interesting facts about Corn Island and Paraiso Beach Hotel.

Our mayor Cleveland Webster has anounced some really welcome improvements for Corn Island. The airport will be expanded beginning 2011. Also he is building a new school on Wuala Point for the Miskito community. And there will be erosion protection on a big part of the west side of the island.
Also he anounced a new road from CAF connecting to Quinn hill.

Tourism will be the new economy for the future on Corn Island and there is still a lot of work to be done in that field. The mayor's office is not really pushing it as hard as they should in my opinion, leaving the islanders with not much choice then to try fishing again.

SCHOOL PROJECT
The school project we did in co-operation with Mitialto is now about to finish, and with excellent results!
- The Rigoberto Cabezas school was renovated
- A new school was built for the pre-school of Fay's Angels

- Ebenezer primary school was extended with 4 class rooms
- The current building of the Ebenezer school has been re-built so it's like new again and offices and sanitaries have been constructed

- The new hotel school is built and ready to open its doors in Feb 2011. The school will teach to potential waiters, cooks, tourist guides, and facilitiy staff.
- The new technical school is built and will recieve its first load of equipment and tools in Feb 2011.

The remaining problem is still the level of education on the island and the motivation of the teachers.
